Waves and Sound
Properties of mechanical waves and sound.
Properties of mechanical waves and sound.
The quantities that describe waves and their application to sound: wavelength, frequency, amplitude, period, wave speed, pitch and intensity, plus phase, the speed of sound, the decibel scale, the Doppler effect, resonance, standing waves, superposition and beats.
| Property | Description |
|---|---|
| Wavelength | Distance between consecutive corresponding points of a wave. |
| Frequency | Number of wave cycles per unit time. |
| Amplitude | Maximum displacement from equilibrium. |
| Period | Time for one complete wave cycle. |
| Wave Speed | Product of frequency and wavelength. |
| Pitch | Perception of sound frequency. |
| Intensity | Power per unit area carried by a sound wave. |
| Phase | The position of a point within a wave cycle, expressed as an angle. |
| Speed of Sound | How fast sound travels in a medium; about 343 meters per second in air at 20 degrees Celsius. |
| Decibel | A logarithmic unit for sound level: sound intensity level is 10 log10 of the ratio of intensity to a reference. |
| Doppler Effect | A change in observed frequency when the source and observer move relative to each other. |
| Resonance | Large-amplitude oscillation that occurs when a system is driven at its natural frequency. |
| Standing Wave | A wave pattern with fixed nodes and antinodes formed by two waves traveling in opposite directions. |
| Superposition | The net displacement of overlapping waves is the sum of the individual displacements. |
| Beats | A periodic variation in loudness heard when two sounds of slightly different frequencies are combined. |
| Timbre | The quality that distinguishes two sounds of the same pitch and loudness, determined by their harmonic content. |
The shape of this dataset, read from the data itself: every column, its type and a real value. Agents can use this to plan a query without fetching the whole document.
