Routing Protocols
Algorithms and protocols that determine packet paths.
Algorithms and protocols that determine packet paths.
The routing protocols and routing techniques network engineers meet most: distance-vector and link-state interior protocols, BGP for the internet, and the static and default routes that tie them together. Each row gives the protocol, its type and what it does.
| Protocol | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| RIP | Distance-vector | Uses hop count; limited to 15 hops. |
| OSPF | Link-state | Dijkstra-based intra-domain routing. |
| EIGRP | Advanced distance-vector | Cisco proprietary with fast convergence. |
| BGP | Path-vector | Inter-domain routing using policies and attributes. |
| Static Routing | Manual | Administrator configures fixed routes. |
| Default Route | Manual | Route used when no more specific route matches. |
| IS-IS | Link-state | Intra-domain link-state protocol widely used in service-provider and large data-center networks. |
| OSPFv3 | Link-state | OSPF for IPv6, carrying IPv6 prefixes. |
| RIPng | Distance-vector | RIP for IPv6; hop-count metric limited to 15. |
| Babel | Distance-vector | Loop-avoiding protocol designed for wired and wireless mesh networks. |
| Policy-Based Routing | Policy | Selects the next hop by criteria such as source address or application instead of the destination alone. |
| Equal-Cost Multi-Path (ECMP) | Load sharing | Spreads traffic across several paths of equal cost, common in spine-leaf fabrics. |
The shape of this dataset, read from the data itself: every column, its type and a real value. Agents can use this to plan a query without fetching the whole document.
| Section | Field | Type | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| data | protocol | string | RIP |
| data | type | string | Distance-vector |
| data | description | string | Uses hop count; limited to 15 hops. |
The static files contain the same reference rows as the API, with no API rate limit. Live metadata, such as view counts, may differ. Use the API for content negotiation; use the static files for a cacheable snapshot.
